The installation of the units has been carried out by Crewe-based industry leaders Active, Supply and Design.

The man behind Birstall Mill Carpets has responded to repeated inquiries about storage space by helping to create the Fuzzy Lemon Self Storage Company in Birstall.

For the last two years friends, family and customers of Robert Howes and his partner Ley Farnell have mentioned their desire to find somewhere where items large and small can be housed in total safety. In response Ley has been the driving force in creating Fuzzy Lemon, situated behind the Birstall Mill showoom on Bradford Road.

In fact one of their first customers was Ley’s parents, who are moving to live in Turkey and wanted to make sure some of their more sentimental items were well looked after.

"Many people are still unaware of what ‘self storage’ actually is," said Robert. "Most seem to think that it is just a warehouse, consisting of one large room. In fact it is just the opposite."

Fuzzy Lemon's storage units range in size, starting from 25 square feet and rising to 150 sq ft. There is a broad range to choose from. Ley, who has day-to-day responsibility for running the company, said: "People find that they can store small items like accounts for archiving, books and sports equipment to a house full of items when moving."

Several small businesses have been in contact because there will be very useful office space available too.

Ley added: "Each customer has private access to the storage unit, being the sole key holder. It gives them total privacy and security regarding their contents."
